The atelier

Woven, not molded

Most mats are extruded: a sheet of PVC or foam pressed to a thickness and cut. A Mahola mat is made the other way round. Yarn is spun, dyed in a pot, dried in shade, then passed through a handloom by people who have woven cloth their whole working lives.

Questions & answers

How does a cotton mat grip?

A dry cotton mat grips differently from a rubber one, and better as you go. The weave takes up moisture rather than letting it sit on the surface. Many practitioners mist the hand and foot areas lightly before starting.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash, or machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Dry flat. Avoid hot water, bleach and harsh detergents. They take the depth out of plant color faster than anything else.

Will the color fade?

Ayurvedic dye holds beautifully in shade and fades in a window. Keep it out of long direct sun, and expect two mats of the same name, a season apart, not to match exactly. The dye lot, the water and the weather it dried in all show up in the cloth.

How does it age?

It softens. Instead of flaking or delaminating, a well-kept mat settles with use, and at the end of a long life it is cotton fiber, which composts.
