Care Instructions
Keep the magic alive. A Mahola mat is not washed on a schedule; it is an object to be maintained with care.
The daily routine
After each use, shake it out. You can also wipe your mat with a damp cloth, then let it air dry. Never roll it up while it is wet, as this can cause mould. This is sufficient in nine cases out of ten.
When to clean your mat
Deeper cleaning is occasional, often seasonal, and depends on your use. Consider it when the mat has an unusual odour, when it has been used intensively and shows it, or when you feel the need to freshen it up. Apart from these cases, it is not necessary to wash it.
The most common mistakes
- Washing too often
- Using conventional detergent
- Washing in a machine that is too small
- Wringing it out vigorously
- Exposing it to the sun
- Rolling it up while wet
These practices can cause colour migration, a sticky latex backing, or a loss of fabric durability.
Seasonal washing: by hand
- Cold water only
- Soak for 5 to 10 minutes at most
- An ultra-natural detergent, or ideally two teaspoons of soap-nut powder in a cotton bag
- Lather and wash the mat gently; do not scrub
- Rinse thoroughly so no residue remains
Machine washing, with precautions
- Large-capacity machine only (laundromat type), without an agitator
- Very gentle or hand-wash cycle, cold water (86°F / 30°C at most)
- No ordinary detergent: an ultra-natural detergent or soap-nut powder in a cotton bag
- A wet mat is very heavy; a small machine can damage it
Drying
Dry flat or hung horizontally, in the air, always in the shade. Never use a tumble dryer or a radiator, and never leave it in direct sunlight.
Our philosophy
We prefer to preserve natural methods, without chemical treatment, rather than standardise our products. This sometimes involves slightly different care and a gentler approach. It is also what makes the beauty and authenticity of your mat. If you have any doubt or problem after washing, write to us at support@mahola.us; we always prioritise a tailored solution.
